“Kingsbridge, Devon.  Monday 5.15pm. Had the most beautiful ride out here from Plymouth (approx. 20 miles). County a mass of primroses deep blue violets and bluebells. Am sitting close to the river in warm sunshine. Beautiful church here, very well kept. Hope the present decent weather lasts ! Regards to all. L xx”

“Friday 6th July. Dear Keith & Wendy. Staying in Keswick (3 miles) away on right of this viewpoint. Reet champion tha knows ! Today climbed “Great Gable” by one of the more difficult routes. Thin path snaking up and round across the steep, boulder, volcanic face – felt like Frodo climbing Orodruin ! Don’t know about Sat. yet, but Sunday I’m going to attempt Scafell Pike, the highest of all. See you soon. Regards, Steve.”
